Funny, but I've been watching these "rock legend" shows on the AXS channel, and the DEAD have come up more than a time or two in a similar context...for example, "they sucked and it was bad for us" or some such (what I keep thinking is that the Who/Jimi weren't bothered at Monterrey--ie, if someone sucks, you come after and show them up, right? That's how it should work...).

Ah, yeah, another one from CCR: "...we saw the DEAD...they were so bad...it put us off drugs..." (seriously; not the exact quote, but they said that it convinced them they had to be clean, sober and professional or else they'd sound like the DEAD that time they saw them...).

Add to that the CCR were East Bay . John in his peak, was one of the best writers of a 2-3 minute roots inflected song . Not many could match him .These are good songs . But he is is a funny/grumpy guy . And he clearly doesn't get the Dead, . Same with (a lesser figure) Steve Miller .Same as a lot of people, fine . Yes, they would have got on earlier if things went ok for the Dead, they would have still gone one in the middle of the night . I suspect the crowd would be still pretty sleepy . He is one who didn't want to be filmed . And "sabotaged"? They had 9 top ten singles from 69-71 .
Relax Mr. Fogerty .

Agreed--those were some well written tunes, if simple and straight forward (nothing wrong w that just like Buddy Holly and many others).

Watching these shows--our boys, even as much as "we" give Bob crap for various flaws in our view--really did survive a long time and work well together (duh); these shows reveal how often folks in the other bands were real dicks...John F. certainly seemed to rub a lot of folks the wrong way.

Imagine how popular he'd be if he had rubbed folks the right way.

(sorry, slow day...)

Me included.
When Fogerty got to Jerry while doing band introductions at that 1989 AIDS benefit, in his skin tight black leather pants, the maestro was at his rig -back turned to the audience- involved in his familiar (to us) in-between-song tuning ritual. 'Ol John was dismayed at the lack of show biz on display there, and made some sort of a throw-off comment about 'the genius at work.'

DD's comments about CCR being East Bay are spot on. There def was a culture clash there, and that for sure comes into play with his comments now about Woodstock 50 years ago. He coyly mentions they were aware of the Dead's reputation at the time, but of course doesn't characterize that for clarity's sake. He's been grumpy for years. What's his problem? He didn't make enough money?
